Screw the indoor waterpark – I’m going Rivering

Rivering
Let me make it official that I am Totally Game for this emerging form of winter fun! Just you read this post (and subsequent article) by The Gear Junkie and then try to settle back into your insulated, snowless, devoid-of-frozen-waterfalls, barren wasteland called Indoors.

My buddy Ryan and I took a crack at this last weekend, and at night, no less! Will try to post shortly…

Voyageur Maps

Voya

A tip of the toque goes out to Voyageur Maps, who’ve just made their hot-off-the-press BWCAW maps, available to the public. I’d only heard about them recently, but if anyone’s been anxiously awaiting their release, it’s easy to see why. I love the clean, uncluttered design, paired with the comprehensive index of lakes on the back. And each map includes a detailed chart of fishing info, as well as detailed histories (human and natural) for the region depicted. Sacre bleu!, how’m I gonna stand the wait to break in one of these maps?

Run Frodo, Run!

Vibram FivefingersMeet the Vibram FiveFingers.
Promising just enough protection, without sacrificing “that same physical and visceral sensation” of going shoe-less, FiveFingers are recommended for “barefooting sports” such as bouldering, paddling, and yoga. Oh! and also for running barefoot.
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, and I was quick to ridicule too. Shoes with toe inserts seem a little bit absurd. Like the idea of little doggy sweaters–What’s the point? But deep down, part of me would like to go barefoot all the time during the warm months. Anybody out there have a pair?

‘Get out there before it melts…’

…Sage words for outdoorsy-types this last week in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

There’s a big picture, seize-the-day message in there, too. Which brings us to our first blog post. Winter is roughly 1/3 over. The Great Northwoods are calling. And you’ll be reading about wicked new gear that you’ll have to start saving up for, like as in Now-ish. Time’s wasting, let’s go out and play.
