Results from a recent study from the National Academy of Sciences are showing that “all major lines of evidence point to an ongoing and fundamental shift away from nature-based recreation.” And what is inciting this wave of laziness? Things like Xbox 360, YouTube and blogs.
Furthermore,
“The replacement of vigorous outdoor activities by sedentary, indoor videophilia has far-reaching consequences for physical and mental health, especially in children,” Pergams said in a statement. “Videophilia has been shown to be a cause of obesity, lack of socialization, attention disorders and poor academic performance.”
Folks, we’ve just gotten 2-5″ in the Northland and more to come with the weekend. So peel your kids away from the archived Voltron episodes on YouTube and teach ‘em how to cross-country ski. Or snowshoe. Or throw ‘em out in the wilderness and see how they do. Just get out and enjoy what is inarguably the best winter our state’s had in years. [via GetOutdoors]
