Hikes from Hell

Everyone has a ‘camping trip from Hell’ story or three. But I’d way rather hear about yours, than mine.
Hiker Hell is a blog dedicated to “learning from other people’s mistakes, so you don’t make the same ones.” Topics tackled include animal attacks, getting lost from your group after pooping behind a tree and the classic conundrum of drinking unsafe water vs. risking dehydration. Some are entertaining, others a bit harrowing, but there’s a free nugget of wisdom to be had in each one.
Got a ‘hell trip’ story to share? We would A-L-L love to hear it [heh heh], so tell us already! but honestly – God help you if you’ve truly, actually gotten lost on a potty break.

Well, it isn’t quite from hell, but last time we were in the BWCA, Andy (of upnorthica) sprained his ankle collecting firewood. I had the privilege of carrying our canoe for the majority of the rest of the trip.
Then there was the trip with another couple into the BWCA. My friend had a unexpected lower intestinal emergency. Laughing all the way to the biffy late at night, I was responsible for holding her new pair of clean underwear while she changed. Standing there laughing like Lucy and Ethel over the incident caused me to have to use the loo as well. After finishing my business she asked me to hand over the underwear. I realized that I was no longer holding them and a search in the brush ensued. It began to dawn on me that the nice white tp I thought I had used was actually my friends last pair of clean underwear. A peek down into the biffy confirmed it. She was stuck, naked as a baby from the waste down with no more clean underwear with a trip that was still three days from completion. Bringing along one extra pair like I’ve always done on trips saved the day. I passed mine along. Moral of the story? Bring meds to move the plumbing along sooner and always stash a extra pair of underwear.

Okay, people, I didn’t mean for you to share *my* stories…!
