Molehill Polar Pants
It’s not the Northwest Territories, however the kids have paddled the Boundary Waters through curtains of snow and cold.
One way to prevent frozen limbs is to provide a good mid-layer of warmth.
Molehill has spent the last 15 years making durable outdoor clothing for kids. Our kids will be keeping toasty with their Polar Pants this fall.
Made with Polartec 200 fleece, they combine lightweight materials and warmth. With active kids in mind, they are constructed with reinforced knees layered with Teflon coated waterproof, breathable nylon. Scampering up the granite face will not be a problem.
The elastic waist creates a custom fit so all the little bears will stay comfortable.

A Taste of the Gunflint Trail
Good smells are coming from the trail, but it’s not from the campsite on Poplar Lake.
Saturday, September 11, eat your way along the Gunflint Trail as local businesses team up with the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center to whip up tempting recipes from A Taste of the Gunflint Trail cookbook.
The event will benefit the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center . With a suggested donation of a $1 per tasting, you can feel good about helping the museum construct a nature trail boardwalk.
Along the way, join a guided hike with naturalist Steve Robertsen as you explore the new Centennial Trail.
At the end of the trail, there is a ice cream and pie social at Chik-Wauk in case you need to fill in the cracks. While there, hike some of their scenic trails or enjoy chatting with local book authors at a book signing.
So toss in the flannel jacket, kids, and camera, it’s going to be a delicious drive.
Event goes from 11am – 5pm.
Death of Ely Research Bear Raises Concerns
This year, world wide attention has been focused on Lily and Hope, research bears monitored by the North American Bear Center in Ely. We’ve posted about Lily in the past here.
Owing to national news coverage of Hope’s birth, they have remained in the public spotlight. Lily now has over 100,000 Facebook ‘friends.’ It’s a good time to be a bear.
So word quickly spread far beyond the state offices when a bloodied radio collar showed up in a DNR mailbox yesterday. Researchers determined that the collar belonged to Sarah, another of the 13 bears that the bear center monitors.
Although there are no solid answers as to why a collared bear was shot, people are trying to make sense of it and different theories are already cropping up.
UpNorthica will continue to update this story as it develops.
Campmor Youth Cascade II Pants
It could rain buckets. The skies release their furies. And that would not ruin our Boundary Waters trip with the kids.
Fall trips almost guarantee a little shower or snowfall, but it doesn’t have to be hard to keep the younger set prepared.
We love the Campmor Youth Cascade II Pants. These light-weight, waterproof, windproof pants keep out the rain, keep in the warmth.
Made of nylon ripstop fabric with polyurethane coating and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish means that you can fish in the rain, eat in the rain and paddle in the rain. All the seams are sealed so that no little water droplet can wiggle its way in.
A comfortable fit, they are made with a elasticized waistband and one-hand adjustable drawcord. They can be pulled over boots or water shoes thanks to zippered leg side openings, elasticized cuffs with tabs and snap adjustments for a custom, snug fit.
The best part is they weigh a mere 6.4 ounces which means that our kids will be carrying them in their packs. Pants sized XS to XL, so even your five year old will be covered. Snatch some up for for $15.
You may just spot us singing in the rain.

S’mething Different for S’mores?

While planning meals (and desserts) for upcoming fall trips, this caught our eye: Dark chocolate-dipped Granola Thins.
Who knows what led the market research whiz-bangs at Nature Valley to flatten granola bars. But these interested us as a possibly more trail-ready ingredient for s’mores. Less packaging, better for you, and hopefully better tasting. You may see us trying them out soon; if nothing else, we’ll give our verdict on how they do as just plain old flat granola bars.
