Dump us out in the woods with a match and strip us naked, but for heavens sake, make sure you leave us with MSR’s Mutha Hubba Tent HP.
Satisfying our wishes and expectations, this tent would be roomy for two and cozy (in a good way) for three people.
First off, it weighs a scant 6lbs. You’ll be hard pressed to find a three person tent that is lighter. It matters when you’re huffing along 325 rods. Next, it’s roomy. It is 40 square feet, with an interior height of 46 inches. We found it easy to sit and eat our lunch in on a blustery, rainy day. Capping off the tent are two vestibules totaling 14 square feet. In one we kept our packs, the other offered a nice entry with room for shoes.
The Mutha Hubba tent is made of ripstop nylon with DWR treatment and polyester mesh. The rain-fly is coated poly-silicon, rip-stop nylon. During our test, we withstood snow, heavy rain and and wind. Everything stayed dry, including the smashed sleeping bags against the tent walls.
Set up is the easiest we’ve ever experienced. Three poles. One hub and swivel design took the confusion out of pole placement. The tent clips effortlessly into the poles. We could do it one-handed. The design is simple and effective. The best part of all – and we have only seen this on MSR tents – is that they have PRINTED the set up instructions right on the tent bag flap. Duh! No more muddy paper directions while you’re breaking the tent in.
Finally, the tent packs to 19×8. It compact nicely and gave us some extra room in our pack.
We felt the tent was reasonably priced considering the weight, materials and efficiency of design. It’s going to be a part of our gear family for quite a long time.
MSRP: $549.95 (although we’ve seen it for quite a bit less)
