Ice Fishing Podcasts: Something To Listen To While Supposedly Ice Fishing
You can now add ‘listening to iPod,’ to the long list of diversions in your ice fishing house. But at least you’ll be learning something from the experts…
A Guided BWCAW Trip For Bear Lovers
Remember when people hoped they wouldn’t see bears in the Boundary Waters? Yeah, well…that was then. This summer, an Ely outfitter will give fans of Lily and Hope a chance to help out their ursine friends while camping out in their neck of the woods.
Forgotten photos of the BWCA
Check out these fantastic vintage photographs of some favorite Boundary Waters lakes! Recently rediscovered in a U.S. Forest Service photo album, they give us a view of circa-1940s Minnesota wilderness.
UpNorthica Reviews: Suunto A-30 Compass
So, you’ve got your June permit in hand and your route pretty well mapped. But have you figured out how you’re going to navigate your way around that endless horizon of water? MORE
Filming The Singing Wilderness
Filmmaker Peter Olsen has been lugging loads of camera equipment into the Boundary Waters for the past five years. Winter is next on the list. Oh, and he brings a tent and some grub too.
Western Wall Teton Tent
Interested in a nicely made, reasonably priced, canvas-sided tent? We thought so.
UpNorthica Interviews: Michael Maruska, Modern Yurt Builder
The first cabin Michael Maruska built was nicer than most: Modest-yet-cozy living space. Wood stove. Everything down to the hand-built furniture and the lakeside location seemed to make it the quintessential north woods getaway – except that it wasn’t actually a cabin.
Three Good Reads for Winter Campers
We recently unearthed some helpful books for winter campers. And since ‘preparedness’ is the key word for winter camping, we felt these might make nice additions to our library. Read on; they may demand a spot in yours too.
Mont-bell O.D. Compact Dripper 4
Everybody has their trick for getting a dark-roast brew in the woods. We think this ultra-light, O.D. Compact Dripper 4 is slick. Weighing just 0.18 ounces, it’s made of polyester micro mesh and comes with a storage pouch. Alloy wire keeps the filter open while you pour in water. The filter suspends over your cup using two sticks. The company suggests using chopsticks as support, but we figure that some narrow sticks found in the woods would work just as fine. Washing consists of a quick rinse. Makes 4-7 cups, so you can share – if you want.

Snowshoeing off the Gunflint
Hello! It’s time to strap on your snowshoes. With the snow piled up north, it’s one of the few ways you’ll hike into woods without sinking to your knees. You’ll stay plenty warm and most anyone can participate. And, you don’t have to go off the beaten path – unless you really want to.
We discovered a handful of trails that will keep you busy on January weekends exploring in solitude.
What are you waiting for?
