Mont-bell O.D. Compact Dripper 4
Everybody has their trick for getting a dark-roast brew in the woods. We think this ultra-light, O.D. Compact Dripper 4 is slick. Weighing just 0.18 ounces, it’s made of polyester micro mesh and comes with a storage pouch. Alloy wire keeps the filter open while you pour in water. The filter suspends over your cup using two sticks. The company suggests using chopsticks as support, but we figure that some narrow sticks found in the woods would work just as fine. Washing consists of a quick rinse. Makes 4-7 cups, so you can share – if you want.

Dr Cow Tree Nut Cheese
We like to stop mid-day along the trail for a pick-me-up. It’s good to have something that is prep-free. We’re always on the lookout for something unique that will make the bites more interesting.
Everyone, meet Dr Cow Tree Nut Cheeses. Made by a small eco-friendly facility in New York these “cheeses” are dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan.
Could they possibly be good, we thought? We tried the cashew and macademia nut flavors.
The texture is similar to a slightly dry cream cheese. First off don’t expect them to totally resemble cheese in flavor or texture. We found however that they had very light nutty and slightly tangy flavors, heightened by pink Himalayan salt. The cashew nut cheese was our favorite and tasted similar to a mild cheddar with a lemon finish. They spread nicely on our crackers and we could see using them as a spread for other breads or veggies. Packaged in 4oz compostable containers, each allows for a generous single serving or a nice tasting for two. Plus, you’ll carry out less garbage.
Now there is more room for the wine.

UpNorthica Eats: Earnest Whole Food Bar
We’ve choked down a few trail bars in our life that were waxy and more dense than particle board. How many dollops of over-processed flavor do you want?
We hoped Earnest Whole Food Bars were honest. When you have granola-y bar flavors like Cran Lemon Zest or Choco Peanut Butter, Earnest Bars, you’ve got our attention. These little bars are made in small, homemade batches, free of preservatives and artificial ingredients.
Ok, so, how do they rate?
Very good actually. The flavors are fresh with natural ingredients shining through. The bars are not overly thick or dense. A little bit chewy. Just right. Made with whole foods – no mashed, packed mystery bits. You can actually see the entire nut or berry. They also use heart-healthy, rich-tasting almond butter instead of conventional oil. The Choco Peanut Butter is especially tasty. Many can be eaten by those with allergen issues.
Dear Earnest Bar, you’ve won a spot in our pack.
